China

Chinese wulong teas form a diverse tea category, with the Fenghuang Mountains in Guangdong and the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian among the best-known production areas. The teas differ in cultivars, processing methods, and roasting levels. Fenghuang is renowned for its dancong wulongs, made from a diverse range of local tea plant varieties and individual tea-tree selections. Dancong names often refer to their characteristic aromas, such as Zhi Lan Xiang (“Orchid Aroma”) and Mi Lan Xiang (“Honey Orchid Aroma”). The yancha, or “rock teas,” of the Wuyi Mountains, including Da Hong Pao, Rou Gui, and Shui Xian, are often roasted. Lighter roasting tends to emphasize floral and fruity notes, while heavier roasting brings out deeper roasted and nutty aromas. Yunnan Qingxin Wulong is made from the Qingxin cultivar, introduced from Taiwan, and often features floral and aromatic notes.
