Taiwan

Taiwan is particularly renowned for its oolong tea, while smaller quantities of black tea are also produced. Taiwanese tea cultivation has roots in tea plants brought from Fujian, China, but black tea production developed particularly during the Japanese colonial period. The main production area for Taiwanese black tea is the Sun Moon Lake region in Nantou County, especially Yuchi. A notable cultivar is Hong Yu, or “Red Jade” (TTES No. 18), known for its distinctive cinnamon and mint aromas and sweet, refreshing character. Taiwan also produces black tea from cultivars such as Jin Xuan, better known for oolong tea. Taiwanese black teas are generally aromatic and may display sweet, fruity, floral, herbal, spicy, or woody notes.
